While we’re awake during the day it is easy to properly maintain the health and cleanliness of our teeth, but while we are sleeping, it’s a free for all and anything goes. When it comes to sleeping, things like sleepwalking can be pretty common, and so is the grinding of teeth.
Night bruxism, the grinding or clenching of the teeth is something that if not properly diagnosed can wear down the teeth and cause further dental issues. “Doctors do not completely understand what causes this. Possible physical or psychological causes may include emotions such as anxiety, stress or frustration; abnormal alignment of upper and lower teeth; and other sleep disorder such as sleep apnea. It is not uncommon for those who grind their teeth at night to find that they may also do this during waking hours. Mild bruxism may not require treatment. However, in some people, bruxism can be frequent and severe enough to lead to jaw disorders, headaches, damaged teeth and other problems.”
If you or someone you know suffers from the grinding of teeth make sure to contact your Ottawa dentist as soon as possible. They will be able to properly diagnose the issue and provide different treatment options to help remedy the issue.
